Choosing the right cutting tool starts with matching insert grade and coating to your workpiece material and cutting speed. For steel roughing, a PVD-coated negative-rake insert like the Kennametal CNMG series balances edge strength with heat resistance. For finishing passes, a sharper positive-rake insert such as the Widia VNMG improves surface finish at lower depths of cut. Solid carbide end mills and drills should be selected by flute count and helix angle: more flutes suit finishing and harder materials, while fewer flutes with higher helix angles clear chips faster in aluminum and softer alloys.
